Bulletin Description: This course will cover issues of gender and its intersections with race, class, sexual orientation, and librarianship. These intersections impact both the ways in which we work in libraries, archives, and cultural heritage institutions, as well as the ways in which our work in these spaces produces knowledge. The impact of gender on the profession in general, as well as the specific roles of librarians will be explored. Topics such as feminist pedagogy, LGBT library services, the production of librarian identities, queering library practices (archiving, cataloging), subcultural literacy practices, and gender and power in cyberspace will be covered. Student work will culminate in the development of an intervention that promotes dialogue, equity and critical practice within the LIS field.
